The Asian Boxing U19 & U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok operated under the close supervision of Technical Delegate David Pike (Australia) and Deputy Technical Delegate Maria Karina Picson (Philippines), both certified by World Boxing.
World Boxing requires that Technical Delegates (TDs) and Deputy Technical Delegates (DTDs) meet strict criteria to ensure neutrality and professionalism. Neither can be a national of the host country, an active referee/judge, or a boxer, and they must be certified by World Boxing to serve at any World Boxing competition.
As Technical Delegate, David Pike was responsible for ensuring the Field of Play and all areas for boxers, referees, judges, and technical officials were functioning to standard. No session could begin without his presence; in his absence, the most senior DTD in this case, Maria Karina Picson would assume the role.
The TD’s responsibilities included:
Overseeing all bout decisions.
Reviewing scores and obtaining feedback from Referee and Judge Evaluators.
Leading the daily R&J Sanctions & Filters Meeting and ensuring compliance with sanctions procedures.
Chairing the daily Technical Officials’ meeting.
Evaluating technical officials for reporting to the World Boxing Sports and Competition Committee.
Appointing replacements for absent officials and managing competition interruptions due to force majeure.
Addressing improper behaviour and managing conflicts of interest.
The Deputy Technical Delegate shares the same duties and authority as the TD, stepping in when necessary. Maria Karina Picson’s role required her to be fully versed in all operational, officiating, and competition protocols, ensuring continuity and adherence to World Boxing standards at all times.
Together, Pike and Picson provided the essential oversight, decision-making, and procedural integrity that allowed the Championships to run smoothly and in full compliance with international regulations, safeguarding fair competition and the reputation of the sport.
