World Boxing has confirmed the final list of candidates for the upcoming Congress 2025, which will take place in Rome on 23 November. Nine candidates from nine nations have been formally approved to stand for election following a comprehensive review process.
All candidates were evaluated in accordance with World Boxing’s Statutes, Rules for Electoral Voting, and Rules for Candidates of Elections. The assessments were carried out by an Independent Vetting Panel composed of three external specialists and supported by Sport Resolutions, a leading organisation in sports arbitration and mediation. The panel reviewed every application submitted in October and confirmed the eligibility of all individuals who progressed to the final stage.
The review concluded with one candidate for the position of President. Gennadiy Golovkin of Kazakhstan will assume the presidency by acclamation during the Congress. This follows the Statutes of World Boxing, which state that unanimous acclamation may be accepted when a position has only one candidate. Golovkin will take over from the current President, Boris van der Vorst, at the conclusion of the Congress.
In addition to the Presidency, delegates will elect one Vice President and two members of the Executive Board. World Boxing will publish Congress papers that outline the full list of candidates along with their professional experience and areas of expertise, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to transparency and strong governance.
Acting Secretary General Mike McAtee expressed appreciation for the work carried out by the Independent Vetting Panel. He highlighted its role in ensuring that the candidates standing for election represent the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and dedication to the future of Olympic style boxing. He stated that each candidate has the potential to shape the organisation’s growth and strengthen the sport at the global level.
The Congress is the principal decision making body of World Boxing. The 2025 edition will be chaired by Vice President Dinah Glykidis. An independent third party will oversee the elections and scrutineers will be present to confirm the accuracy and fairness of the voting process.
World Boxing was established in April 2023 with a mission to safeguard the presence of boxing within the Olympic Movement. The organisation held its first formal meeting with the International Olympic Committee in May 2024 and received provisional recognition as the International Federation for Olympic style boxing on 25 February 2025.
