Asian Games Quarterfinals Set the Semifinal Stage in Nishio

The boxing competition at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya moved another step closer to the medal stages on Sunday evening, with quarterfinal action across the Women’s 65kg, Men’s 60kg and Men’s +90kg divisions at Nishio Gymnasium.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin opened Session 14 with a commanding performance in the Women’s 65kg quarterfinals, earning a unanimous 5-0 victory over Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng.
DPR Korea’s Hwang Hyo Sun was next to secure her place in the semifinals, defeating Iran’s Sarina Naghsh by unanimous decision, 5-0.

India’s Parveen continued her campaign with a strong 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova, while China’s Li Shu completed the Women’s 65kg quarterfinal lineup with a 4-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Aida Abikeyeva.

The Men’s 60kg division saw Uzbekistan’s Abdumalik Khalokov deliver another assured performance, defeating the Philippines’ Junmilardo Ogayre 5-0 to advance to the semifinals.

Host nation Japan also had reason to celebrate as Shunsuke Kitamoto earned a unanimous 5-0 victory over India’s Sachin, with all five judges scoring the bout 29-28.

Korea’s Jang Donghwan was pushed hard by Thailand’s Sakda Ruamtham in one of the closest contests of the evening. Jang secured the semifinal place by split decision, 3-2.

Another narrow decision followed as Tajikistan’s Akmal Ubaidov defeated Afghanistan’s Emal Hamdam 3-2 to complete the Men’s 60kg semifinal lineup.

In the Men’s +90kg division, Kazakhstan’s Aibek Oralbay advanced with a unanimous 5-0 victory over Kyrgyzstan’s Myrzakir Koshaliev.

India’s Narender produced the only stoppage of the session, defeating Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep by RSC at 1:37 of the opening round to secure his place in the semifinals.

Uzbekistan’s Jakhongir Zokirov continued his Asian Games campaign with a dominant 5-0 victory over Tajikistan’s Muhammad Abroridinov.

The evening concluded with a closely contested Men’s +90kg quarterfinal between Iran’s Amir Esmaeili Vandaei and China’s Danabieke Bayikewuzi. Esmaeili Vandaei emerged with a 3-2 split decision victory to claim the final semifinal place of Session 14.

With the quarterfinals complete in all three weight categories, the successful boxers now move into the semifinals as the battle for Asian Games medals continues at Nishio Gymnasium.
